usb switch question
« on: 19 May 2014, 18:31 »
Hey all,

I want to to buy http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/290893058188?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649

I have a 59 plate GTI with the RCD510. In my centre console I have the media in and two cables came with the car (one for USB and one for IPOD). From the looks of it, it will fit (should just be plug and play??)

I currently used the ipod cable, but I am hoping to fit the USB one as well... Is this possible? Can I keep the cable working in centre console and have the additional USB..

Why not charge your phone using the 12V socket and access the music from it via Bluetooth?

Edit, I just noticed that your car is a 59 reg, therefore may not have Bluetooth. If that is the case, it would be worth retro fitting it, then you'll be able to do everything.
Red Mk6 gone replaced with a white Mk7 which has gone too. Green Mk2 here to stay.

The last owner got VW to fit bluetooth, so I am able to pare my phone through the MFD and bluetooth audio works fine. Which is super useful.

I didn't want to use the 12v socket, because its messy and tends to be bad at charging. I wanted to fit the USB socket and use it with the RCD + charging. If not possible, I could just wire the USB to just be a charging cable. But this seems a bit of a bodge.

I just like the idea of using the USB switch.

Is it plug and play for me or?? Sorry still confused :)

I guess there is not a cleaner way... e.g. just plugging it into the back of the head unit?

Yep, if i were to do it it'd wire it up to a 12v-5v converter (similar to this http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/12V-to-5V-USB-DC-DC-Buck-Converter-Step-Down-Module-Power-Supply-/390689910583?pt=UK_BOI_Electrical_Test_Measurement_Equipment_ET&hash=item5af6eeef37) and wired to a fuse tap (similar to http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/ADD-A-CIRCUIT-FUSE-TAP-PIGGYBACK-EXTRAFUSE-MINI-BLADE-TYPE-/251170199430?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item3a7ae91786) which will feed of an ignition fuse. I hate cutting into wires

Is this usb purely to charge your phone? I have read the thread but not clicked the links my question is at any point would you want to use it as an audio in? Obviously this effects how you wire in. Sorry i didn't think of this straight away just came to me as i was walking the dog been a long week :-(

1. obtain a multi device input lead that fits into centre console i.e. USB
2. copy iPod to your phone so all in one
3. copy iPod to SD card and use this option (not sure if RCD510 has this but RNS510 does)
