bit stuck on what to do car wise so just wondering what your thoughts are. what ever happens it isnt going to be for a while maybe even wownt happen, maybe wownt happen till next summer but here goes.

Option A, (my original option) i was going to put a hybrid turbo onto my mk4 golf, put injectors and maf, supersized tip etc, had a quote to do all the work incluiding map, should see 250bhp easy (standard rods so wouldnt want to go higher) shouldnt make a difference to insurance, and if it does it will be minor, the quote i got was around £1300. however i have a feeling that next summer i will be looking to get a new car no matter what happens.  i have enough sat in my bank to go out and do this tomorow if i wanted to.

option B keep the golf, keep it as it is, and buy a porsche 996/carrera 4s or simelar around 15-20k, use the porsche as a bit of a weekend car and the golf as a daily, or sell the golf and buy something cheep and cheerfull like a pug or old mk3 diesel etc as daily car. now as much as id like to do that it would be on finance, and would take me 2 or 3 years to pay off the outstanding balance of the porsche. i could afford this, however, cant decide whether i like the idea of the monthly payments, would i rather spend this money on something else or would i rather put this money towards a house deposit or something different im not sure.

option C again keep the golf or buy something cheep and cheerfull as a daily, and buy a caterham at around 10k, again this would be on finance and would proberbly be paid off in a year or 2-3 years with a smaller repayment per month, but again, do i want these repayments coming out every month. also another problem is in winter id be screwed as we do not have a garage, i would proberbly end up buying one of those garage tent type contraptions, but not sure how good they are etc.

i have never bought a car on finance so not sure whether ill like the feeling of the payments coming out every month, however i am youngish, have no real ties i.e kids house etc. so now is the ideal time to get debted up if i was going to do it.  and i dont really want to be buying a house for a few years now.

so what are your thoughts, keep the golf, pump over a grand in it to most likely sell it next year which i wownt see back, keep it as it is for a daily/buy something cheep for a daily and buy something fun as a weekend toy.

the option of buying something like a m3/porsche etc. and using it as a daily is out of the question as i do too many miles.

been rackin my brain for a month or so now (had the money for the turbo etc saved in my bank for a few months now but just cant decide whether its a stupid move or not).

daily my mind is changing on which i want to do.

also, if i turbo'd the golf/bought a caterham i would be making very good use of the local facilities at croft racetrack.

whats your thoughts


P.S if i bought a caterham/porsche it would be something i would keep for a long time and be the real pride and joy i.e 10+ years.

You said it yourself I'm young and now is the time to get debted up to my eyeballs? Contradictory TBH.

To confuse you even more..... I stopped at the lights the other day a 45+ year old guy had a new 911 Porsche with a dolly bird next to him, and I turned around to the wife and said "Shoot me if I turn into that guy in ten years time!"   

Whatever car you buy its personal choice made by you only!

Probly picked a bad way to word that tbh. Not dented up to my eyeballs as such. But into a few k debt for a few years where I could easily afford the repayments. In five or ten years time I will have a mortgage. Maybe a kid. Etc etc etc. therefore A car on finance would not be a priority and proberbly would to happen as all my money would be spent on my commitments where as now I have no real commitments.

Most people my age are going out and buying brand new cars on finance for 20odd k. That in 5 years they will proberbly sell. If I got in debt over either one of these cars. It would be kept. For a long time.

If you choose the right used car, you ought not to loose much money in depreciation over a 2-3 years of ownership. Meaning other than running costs, it could only cost you the interest on the money borrowed, as you'd get your money back when you sell it.

You'd need to do some homework, as I don't know how well Caterhams / 996's etc hold their values once the initial new car depreciation is out of the way.

If you decide to "finance" the car don't take the quote from the garage, go to your bank and get a quote for a loan, that way the money isn't secured on the car, so if you decide you want/need to sell the car it won't have 'outstanding finance' on it which can make it difficult to shift privately, also consider the fact that a 15-20k Porsche will already be 10ish years old so make sure it's a been loved.

Personally i'd spend a grand on the mk4.

Just do it!!

My mate has just got a bmw e92 4.0 v8 m3 at 23. His brother has a ford mk2 rs focus at 24. Mate just got a lotus exige s. Another mate got a mk2 focus rs 500 rep its 450bhp and hes 22 too. Ive put 10k in my m3 and dont regret it one bit. All paid for though but my mates aint.

Life is too short mate.

Get the porsche! 

What I did was got a car thats stopped depreciating so you wont loose as much money when you come to sell.

Yep if I got porsche it would be around ten year old but from a very very reputable company I.e i know in the past people who live in other countries such as France and even Germany have bought cars from this garage and the garage have drove it over droped it off then hoped on a flight back. So no worry of getting a dog and as I say I wouldn't be rushing into anything.

As for doing it through bank I will have to look I to that cause I have no idea what loans are like. As I say most Iv been in debt is about £400 on a credit card which was paid off within a month

As for depreciation.  I can't see there being much as it would be a weekend toy which has maybe 3-5k put on the clock a year if that. So even if in 5 years I came to sell it I couldn't imagine it would loose a massive amount of money.

Cars are one of those awesome things where you can buy what you can afford, and if you can no longer afford it later on, just sell it.

The trick is being able to afford it to start with. Nobody knows what the future holds, so let future you worry about that. Let present you enjoy life, future you might never happen.

just to throw another curve ball into the mix.

Renault megane r26r  unsure what these are like for insurance, tax, reliability etc etc etc.but always liked the look of them and saw one today and it got me thinking, can get change from 10k for a slightly above average one, and change from 15k for a real low milage good condition one by the looks of it. anybody have any experience?
