Maybe the update isn't considered critical enough a safety risk to warrant a proper recall. In that case, they'll just do all kinds of updates to the car without telling you anything - next time they see it for a service or warranty work.

The majority of recalls carried out by Toyota aren't considered a safety risk (a lot of the time Toyota issue them without an incident ever occurring on the roads) but they still carry them out. BMW in particular have a terrible recall record, much worse than Toyota. The reason no one knows about them however is because of the way they handle them. Where as Toyota take preventative measures, BMW wait for something to happen because they don't want anything to get in the way of their shiny image! Toyota put safety before image I guess.

To be fair, haven't Toyota had some pretty bad failures?  Their head honcho was called before the US senate to testify after their accelerator failures.   They have been on top of their recalls ever since.

This just happened to me about an hour ago.

Not having much luck with the electronics lately...

1. Handbrake failure - latest problem tonight
2. Drive Assist - intermittent problems with the car emergency braking itself (currently disabled)
3. Parking Sensors - Deciding to go off as if you are about to hit someone even though no objects are near the car.

Would anyone by any chance know on what grounds a car can be rejected? ie: how long after taking ownership or the severity of the problems with the car. I really don't want to end up rejecting the car but with the problems I am having surely it could end up with my GTI being exchanged/ replaced?

I've not been using Auto-Hold because I don't like the delay of the handbrake releasing when accelerating. I know it's very slight but I find it very annoying. It turned out not to be VW ringing me and mine says no recall's outstanding on the website so looks like it's just yourself with the "recall" if it actually even is a recall!

I don't know if there are any official rules but would imagine that as you've done less than 1000 miles you would be well within your rights to start discussing this with your dealer as a serious option. There was talk of this on another thread previously and you have to give them the chance to fix before being able to reject

Toyota's recall might have been the largest in terms of car quantity but certainly not the most terrifying! Mazda issued a car recall for 42,000 Mazda 6s in North America about a month ago involving the blockage of some vents in the engine due to spiders nesting and weaving webs all over the place. I would rather have faults in my Electric Handbrake or Accelerator than have spiders in my car! Even the best of manufacturers require car recalls with much more severe cases. Consider it a blessing that the defects in the Mk7 are minimal so far and I hope it stays that way.

I can confirm my car although driving fine since October last year has been recalled.  Infact if I can remember clearly, my Civic Type-R was also called back for a Handbrake issue.  Why is it always the handbrake that gets recalled on cars I own?

This.

There are no news reports and nothing on the VOSA recall website. I suspect the OP's dealer was being proactive in calling people up for the software fix, rather than having to deal with complaints.

I haven't had any sign of an issue yet, nor do I expect there to be one.  I suspect I will book it in for a week or two weeks time just to say I have done it.
