Launch control?
« on: 13 May 2014, 14:04 »
I did a quick search to see if this had been discussed before but couldn't find anything specific.

So today I noticed that if I put the car in gear and floor the accelerator, the revs will not exceed 2.5K. I tried it in 1st and 2nd gear and same thing.

A colleague reckons it's launch control? I didn't release the clutch by the way, the car is still too new for that kind of thing! I can't help thinking though that if I had popped the clutch, all that would have happened would be a lot of wheel spinning and flashing lights showing the traction control kicking in :)

Was the engine cold? Until the engine is up to temp it won't let you rev any higher to protect the engine. Even does this on our VW crafter at work lol

I had just parked up after a 20 minute drive, didn't take note of oil temp or anything like that so engine wouldn't have been classed as cold.
Good luck with the collection of your GTD by the way, it really is a lovely car to drive :)

It's just engine protection. The GTD doesn't have launch control. Only DSG equipped GTI's and R's I think... I'm sure someone will pop up and confirm that!

I watched a video a while back and correct me if I'm wrong, it's a manual GTI with launch control.

I'm not sure if this is launch control or even if this guy did it right but it's a manual.(That I'm sure of lol!)
I just hate the vibration the car did on acceleration makes me think he's harming it. It revs up to 3K as you can see but he seems to press something before launching (auto hold????)

Also, lots of videos of the Mk6 GTD with launch control on youtube but I can't confirm if the Mk7 is the same.

The YouTube vid isn't launch control. To do a proper launch control you need a DSG gearbox. You turn off traction control, select sport mode on DSG,you put your left foot on the brake pedel, you release the handbrake, you give it some revs to about 3000rpm then take your foot off the brake. Then hang on.After a few goes you learn how to control it somewhat so you don't get too much wheels pin.It works better in an R though.

Ohh alright got it. I don't think I'm going to try it any time soon though, I'm pretty satisfied with the car's launch without it! Also I read somewhere here that it might affect some warranty works on the car if you do it too many times? Wouldn't want that considering I have the 2-year warranty extension as well.

As already said, it's just engine protection, most modern cars won't rev beyond about 3k with the clutch in, GTD's do have launch control btw.
