Genuine MK7 carpet mats a bit poor ?
« on: 13 May 2014, 07:29 »
Was cleaning my GTD at the weekend, and with only just over 6000 miles on it, noticed that the main carpet in the car, just to the right of the accelerator (below the brake pedal), is starting to show signs of wear.

When I checked more closely, it seems the design or cut of the new floor mats in the MK7 (that came with the car), are poorly shaped with just a single "tongue" that goes underneath where the clutch would be (mine is a DSG model). There's a sort of hump in the floor to the right of this "tongue" and the mats don't cover this, but it seems my feet touch it when braking, hence the wear on the underneath main carpet. It's not too bad at the moment, but I just don't want it to get any worse.

Here's the area I'm referring to on the image below:

Has anyone found any better shaped mats that go further under the pedal area and better protect the carpet please ?

I've got the rubber ones, haven't noticed this bump you speak of but will check it out tonight and see if they're wearing my carpet out. I really like the rubber ones though, nice and easy to keep clean.

Yeah, I have them as well Kyle, and they are exactly the same shape as the carpet ones (use the rubber ones in the winter).

Of course it could just be me with my big clumsy feet

In my cars, I have the original carpet ones in for the summer, rubber ones for winter and a new set of carpet ones stored away for best.

My driver's mat got worn looking very quickly, after only a few thousand miles! And it's not like I don't mind it or wear heels  I replaced the drivers mat a good while back with an OEM-like mat, except this one has an extra "heel/scuff mat" in the middle of it, so it's far more durable. Still looks new.

I wish the mats went back between the rails a bit and covered all those poxy cut-outs for the likes of me that have their seat back 1 or 2 notches away from max.
Whey ya bugger! It's finally arrived after an 8 month wait....

I've only done 850 miles and the drivers mat already looks properly 2nd hand.

Not noticed anything wrong with the actual carpet but I've a manual and I can't get my feet between the brake and clutch pedals to wear the bit you mentioned!!

Strange one, i did 650 miles in my DSG GTI and could already see a little bit of wear on the mat but 800 miles in the manual R and no problems as yet, i think because your one heel stays in pretty much one area it wears quicker? Still not great though.

my wear is exactly where my right foot sits to pivot for braking and accelerating, and i while using my foot rest more would probably decrease this it would probably make me a crapper driver. Its surprising no one has noticed this and reinfornced this area as a norm, unless i am the only one.
