Hissing noise when I turn my engine off?
« on: 12 May 2014, 17:02 »
Hello,

My 1.8t Aum has developed a hissing noise from down the back of the engine after I switch it off, it's almost like it's dripping something onto the exhaust, it's that kind of sound, has anyone had this problem? It's last for a minute maximum from when I switch it off, thanks

are you sure its coming from there? if it was dripping there would be a gap in the sound every now and then
ARZ K03s, Oettinger Side Skirts, R32 front, Carbon stage 2, Forge 007p (yellow spring), Forge Actuator (yellow spring), Pipercross panel filter with DSG parts, N249 and N112 deleted, SAI deleted, Carbon canister deleted, Rear wiper deleted, Long Life turbo back custom exhaust with 200 cell sports cat, VR6/G60 clutch kit, Creation Motorsport TIP, Catch can, 'Wellycooler', K04 charge pipe, S3 ported inlet manifold - looks pretty standard on the outside though :)

I had this noise when i got my car. Turned out to be the brake vac servo leaking air. Look by the brake fluid   bottles and there is a plastic pipe that goes into the metal servo. The rubber seal had split.

Yeah I'm pretty sure it's coming from there mate, I've had the brake servo pipe split already mate so that's ruled out, it slowly gets quieter and dissappears, could it be a coolant leak?

When you turn the car off have the bonnet popped open and check the brake servo pipe ,my moneys on that being your problem.  it is a rubber seal that holds the plastic pipe in the brake servo. It will look fine but if you move the pipe you will see the gap / split.

Right, I got home from the misses house and got the bonnet open before I switched the engine off, for the first 10 seconds there was nothing, then suddenly it starting hissing so I had a good play about with the hoses and found nothing, it really does sound like water hissing, so I slowing undone my coolant cap to release pressure and instantly it stopped, I followed the line from under the coolant bottle and it goes around the back of the engine, I think that could be there problem, am I right in saying it goes to the turbo? It's a metal pipe goes around the left side of engine around the back, cheers

It's the coolant feed pipe to the turbo!

Have you got air con? Air con makes that kinda noise when you turn the car off after it's been running. Totally normal.
