lack of power
« on: 09 May 2014, 23:07 »
I have been having a lack of power to my mk2 16v , starts fine but has a delay on the throttle .
so I went over few things such as air cleaner to manifold pipe, which was fine then came across a split in the crank case breather pipe! which I cant seem to find anywhere to replace!
thinking I may have been getting somewhere, I just checked the spark plugs pulling the hd leads off to find the middle two are dripping in oil  . I have not been loosing oil but there is a sign of a leak some where.
not sure where to go now?

The oil on the plugs is from a perished rocker gasket where it seals around the plug tunnels.
This will give you firing issues as it starts to break down the leads.
Change the gasket and hope your leads are not cooked.

Have you tried VW Heritage for the breather pipe, helps if you know the part number. Also, when I had oily spark plugs on my 8v, turned out to be the valve stem oil seals and not the rocker cover gasket as is so commonly suggested. Just putting it out there!

After taking my golf gti 16v to bits tonight , I discovered it was not as hard to strip down as I thought, but I did expect the internal gasket to be knackered but it didn't look to bad!
Which makes me think it may be something else filling the spark plug chamber up! Maybe ??

I would do a compression test hope its just rings or valve stems, weeping too much oil down the chamber?

if the oil in the plug recess is coming from the cylinder side there would be more than just power loss, think about it......
Change the gaskets and use a bit of silicone, new leads and plugs
