Front Assist - opinions
« on: 08 May 2014, 18:23 »
Hey guys,

Just wondering if people wouldn't mind sharing their opinions on the front assist?

Reason I am asking is because on 2 occasions in the past week (most recent being on my way home from work tonight) the front assist kicked in while I was driving up to the same set of traffic lights I go through every night. I was going about 25mph with nothing in front when it decided to kick in... Really took me by surprise as the previous time this happened I was only going about 5mph.

I know from previous threads people mentioned small metallic objects or even crisp packets could in theory set it off but there really was nothing other than empty road in front.

It was just luck that no one was behind otherwise I'm sure it would have been one majorly annoyed driver behind.

With these 2 recent occurrences I'm starting to think I would be better switching it off as it seems to have a mind of its own lol.

Other than this my GTI has been epic fun and is simply brilliant to drive!

Question...when the warning on the mfd comes up that shows you're too close to the car in front, is it applying any braking or is this just a warning? The reason I ask is that whenever driving on motorway closing in on car ahead the mfd warning comes up and very rarely do I need to brake when coasting up. I always go to cover the brake thinking I will need to but it seems to decelerate more than you would expect with no accelerator.

Also what is this audible alert? I've never had that only the mfd warning to show too close to the car ahead (which is way too conservative - comes on too regularly - in my opinion).

When the front assist senses danger the MFD displays a red danger picture and there is an audible alarm noise.  I have had this appear a couple of times but the car has never started to brake itself.

+1

I've never came accross a situation where the car has braked on its own. Begs the question as to whether the front assist is working correctly.  Yet driving home from work yesterday the front parking sensors were going nuts.

I've had 3 or 4 occasions whereby the audible warning has gone off, and then a couple of times when the brakes have kicked in with the warning.  Both times I was well in control of the car, however I understand why it went off.  It is good as obviously the car doesn't know you're in control, however the second time was at 70mph and the crunching noise isn't pleasant

I have had it go off a few times as well.
The red mfd icon is a warning and think it primes everything as well as warning the driver.
If it 'thinks' a collision is unavoidable then it will brake itself as well-possibly if no driver input is forthcoming or perhaps regardless.
I have had the car brake itself once so appears to be working normally.

ive had it brake a few times, mostly when cars in front are turning right. if you hold down the traction control button and put it in 'sport' mode, it says front assist disabled, does this mean its turned off?
