cooling problem
« on: 07 May 2014, 19:27 »
Hey,

I have a mk2 golf 1.6 Driver, engine code EZ. Basically water is flowing everywhere is should i.e. through the radiator and through the water pump however it's not going through the carb and therefore the auto choke is constantly open.

The thermostat is not sticking as I have just replaced it along with the water pump. I have waited for the car to warm up but still no luck.

I think I have connected the pipes wrong. If anyone knows how the cooling pipes all fit together the I would appreciate it if you could show me where I'm join wrong or upload a hose diagram.

So I have tried to explain as best as I can. I have also uploaded some pics of how the hoses are connected.

Normally it's the o-ring seal between head and inlet mani that causes this problem. "Cat's bum syndrome" as it's sometimes called. I'm sure rubjonny's Pierburg FAQ thread discusses this and how to fix it.

There should be one coolant hose coming up from the rear of the inlet mani to the autochoke.
Then there's one from the autochoke to waxstat (the other arrowed bit in your first pic).
Last one goes from waxstat to metal water pipe.

Looking at your pics again (earlier in the evening!) I can see that you are completely missing the first and third hose that I described in my previous post.  No's 7 and 8 respectively, here:

Item No. 7 - 037 121 057 is the one that's supposed to be going from inlet mani up to the autochoke (not a very good illustration of its real orientation)
Item No. 8 - 026 121 056G is the one that goes from waxstat to metal water pipe.   (The diagram shows this going to the wrong spot at the carb, should be onto the downward pointing pipe of the waxstat.)

No.6 is the hose that you do have, linking autochoke to waxstat.

Someone has short-circuited all this on your car by directly connecting the inlet mani outlet to the metal water pipe. Leaving autochoke and waxstat 'out in the cold'.
