mk2 gti running problems

Hi, my J reg, 1991 mk2 golf GTI 8v is struggling like mad to keep running, I can start it fine and if I keep the revs up it's fine, but as soon as I remove my foot from the accelerator the car dies. Any ideas guys? Thanks
