Another way to test your PCV valve is to have the engine at idle when warm, then remove the oil filler cap for a fraction of a second. If the engine goes to stall with the cap off then your PCV is fine, however if it makes no different or only a slight change in revs, then get yourself the latest revision unit (available from Awesome GTI).
Also, get yourself to a dealer or someone with VCDS and get your ECU fault codes read. You don't want to be driving about with the engine light on as it's not worth gambling with things like that.
