I've had my car CQuartz'd when it was new and I'm afraid it's not much use when it comes to stone chip protection! The same goes for any sealants or waxes, you are kidding yourself if you think otherwise. Think about it, the stone flicks up against your car at 60+ mph... it's bound to chip the paint no matter what you do.

I've used Chipex with reasonable success. It does require patience (and I probably don't have enough of this) and I'm not convinced it works as brilliantly as they claim but it's certainly more effective than blobbing on a bit of paint with the VW touch up.

Has anyone popped to a Detailer or Bodyshop to have the paint depth checked ?

I imagine VW would have a set threshold of what the paint thickness should be, perhaps some cars have come out a bit on the thin size.

karlak - see this thread on detailingworld for paint thickness: http://www.detailingworld.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?t=333149

For info: this guys Tornado Red GTI, he measures between 146 and 158 microns

Wax and sealants are not going to protect against stone chips, you are in your car doing 70mph, hurtling towards a stone going maybe 50mph in your direction, net speed of 120mph, and a layer of sealant maybe 25 microns (1/40 of a mm) thick. There's only one outcome if that stone has a sharp or pointed edge that hits your car. It's like making a bullet proof vest with single sheet thickness cooking foil.
Whey ya bugger! It's finally arrived after an 8 month wait....

You need one of these

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VW-Golf-MK6-MK7-Bonnet-Bra-GTI-10-08-Worldwide-Shipping-Brand-New-Part-/161261561217?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&fits=Plat_Gen%3AMK+VII%7CModel%3AGolf&hash=item258bf02581

but would you been seen dead driving your car with it fitted?
Theyre hideous.
They can also cause major damage if anything (like a stone) gets caught underneath them. Prolonged use can also cause differences in the paint colour!
