cold starting
« on: 19 October 2003, 22:08 »
Hello
My 16v does not like to start after it has sat all night. I thought it might be the cold start valve or the thermo switch but i have noticed that once it has started it ticks over at 1100 rpm which means the choke must be working so i dont know whats happening. ???

Look at the cold start valve, as all this does is spray extra fuel in when starting the engine from cold. Once it has started, there is no choke, the warm up regulator allows more fuel in to make a richer mixture.

Yep, I've got this prob as well, got my hands on a colortune, but finding the instructions a bit weird,

The main one is about warming up ypur engine before running the colortune, but that's the whole point I want to see what's happening during cold start, anyone want to post a howto :)

Just plug it in, and start your engine from cold. Observe the colour, should be a fair amount of orange.

Its a spark plug with a window, so you can see the colour of the combustion flame, ie. when engine is cold blue with lots of orange, when warmed up blue with small tints of orange. You can buy them in Halfords nice and cheap, very usefull for non-ecu cars like k-jets, carbs.

Stock Valves are meant to tick over between 900 -1100 anyway.
