Hmm why was that there?
« on: 04 September 2005, 16:11 »
Im in the middle of flushing out my coolant system and ive found something odd. If you follow the return hose for the heater matrix it connects to the right hand side of the engine block. Where it connects there is also a hose that looks like some kind of bypass that connects to the metal pipe at the front of the block. Somebody at some point in time has jammed a round bolt up this bypass hose and jubilee clipped onto it thus blocking it. why? Ive decided to remove the bolt and see how it goes. Anybody know why this would have been done in the 1st place? Has this got something to do with the 2.0 bottom end conversion?

your heater matrix - has it blown in the past?

Mine currently is bypassed and there is a bolt where you speak of on mine - I think its to stop the coolant flow back out or summin ?!?!  :undecided:

Nah my matrix if fine and i dont know about the past history. The hose blocked isnt a feed or return for the matrix though. Its more like a bypass for the engine. I will post some pics so you can see.

Can't think of any reason why that would be blocked off!

It should look like this:

On your diagram its this hose.

Any idea what blocking this would achive or what its purpose is anyway?

Thought so!  Too be honest looking at it all I can think of is the hose is a bypass designed to bleed some coolant away from the heater matrix, perhaps because the 16v revs higher than the 8v models and can put more pressure on the system?  We all know they were weak enough to begin with

That flange is the feed to the heater matrix and the pipe splits off back to the metal coolant return pipe, so I recon that must be what its for :)

Yeah makes sense. Just cant understand why it was blocked, as this would put more pressure on the matrix. Ive unblocked it and so far cant detect any difference. It migh have something to do with the LPG conversion. This inerupts the matrix feed in order to heat up the LPG to turn it from liquid to gas before injecting into the engine. Its still running fine though.

Its been a long time since i posted this question but ive found out now what happened as a result of un blocking the hose so i thought id let yall know.
Basicly when i unblocked it, it was summer-ish and still warm. Now that its bloody freezing ive started using my heaters only to find that the heat isnt exactly hot, especially when you put the blower speed up. The reason i can think for this is because most of my coolant is completely by passing the engine through this hose in question thus not supplying much heat to my matrix. So ive dedided to block it again which forces the coolant through the engine and voila i have heat inside the car again. So this explains why ive been lacking heat to my matrix and the engine has been running hot lately. Looking back at the standard valver diagram posted above i dont think the hose i picked out is the one in question. To be honest i think its a different setup to mine, mine being a 2.0 is obviously a little different and is probably why the hose was blocked in the 1st place.

Moral of the story, if it aint broke then dont try and fix it! But i cant help it! I need to know why things are how they are. Oh well riddle solved and all is good in the world again.
