Found out what the problem was with my gti. The fuel inlet banjo bolt to the meter head has a filter fitted when new, and apparently this filter is supposed to be discarded on first service. Mine was still fitted. I sourced a new bolt without a filter, she now pulls all the way to the redline without missing a beat.

just read this and i was thinking high pressure pump, was going to ask if its noisy? if its not generally there ok but you have done right to fit in tank pump , as a rule this is the one to go 1st then kills the HP pump in time
My next thought was have you checked your fuel pressure, this can cause alsorts of problems, then i was going to say about the little banjo filter but you got there before me lol, but i would get the fuel pressure tested, my car was a nightmare till i did this, better starting and generally running great, you can make a fuel test kit for under 30 quid and well woth keeping around

Yes the main fuel pump is quiet, just a buzzing sound. I have acquired a pressure gauge that reads up to 10 bar, I just need to source the pipe and banjo bits now but the last month I've been busy with house stuff so the golf had to just sit in the garage. Its been bloody annoying though and having a pressure gauge would have helped me diagnose it sooner.

I did remove the banjo bolt a couple of months ago and noticed it had a filter, it looked OK and refitted it, but I was talking to my dad about this problem recently, he used to work at a Vauxhall garage in the 70's and he mentioned to me about fuel restrictors that were fitted to new cars that prevented them from being over revved dand then removed at the first service. So I fitted a bolt without this filter, took the golf out for a spin and what a difference it made at higher revs lol.

But it just might be that the high pressure pump is getting tired?

might try it myself lol.  for the home made gauges the 10 bar gauge will be ok, better if its glyco filled as its much smoother, youll need a T piece and a tap and a piece of fuel hose and some couplings , if you send your email ill scan you a diagram i have, how to make it
