Have you contemplated trading up for a mk7?
« on: 14 April 2014, 21:01 »
I've got a 2010 gti with 44k on the clock. I'm thinking of trading up for a mk7 gti. I've never traded a car in my life, I always bought them outright in cash!
Am I better off selling mine privately or taking it to VW with a view to trading it in?

Same here, but as buy in cash I am therefore very wary of the price difference between trade & private. I know selling privately has associated costs such as advertising and also includes 'tyre-kickers' but I've always persevered and so far no issues.

However, you can always negotiate with VW as you're also buying a new car. Depends how desperate you are for the new one, I guess !

Had my GiT from new since Aug 10 but always said to myself that I'd wait until Mk8 GiT is out. Cannot justify new car every model upgrade etc etc

Red
Mk6 GiT since birth in 2010

Depends on whether you get the deal you're looking for on the new car.  You'll probably get more selling privately but it's a bit more hassle.

I'll be ordering a mk7 R next spring, but haven't yet decided whether to trade in the mk6 or sell privately.  All depends on what deal I can secure on the new car.

Have always previously traded-in and paid remainder in cash and will be paying cash this time.  Will approach dealers with a target figure for the R in mind, so all depends if they can reach or come close enough to that.  Greater discount will undoubtedly mean lower trade-in price and vice versa but if it comes in on target, whichever way, will probably go for it.  If not then may look to sell privately.

I had a look recently...and although the Mk7 GTIPP or R is a great car...I kept looking at my 13,000 mile 2010 GTI and wondering if any Mk7 is worth that + £20K.

After driving them...the answer is no...so I'll keep my GTI a bit longer.

I'm trying to avoid my dealer for that very reason lol.....though they should be getting a demo in soon so I might have to take a peek.  I'll have to resist though as I want Dynaudio which has now supposedly been pushed back to bw45.  Besides, I'm not done with my lovely mk6 yet.

You won't know what deal the dealer can offer until you ask. Having a nice, retailable car to px should get you a good trade in price, as the dealer knows he should be able to sell it quickly and get his money back. However, as we all know, it's the price to change that matters.

I have sold all of my cars privately recently, but then I had kept them for a long time, so they were down in the £3-4000 price range. Buying outright will get you the best discount off the new car from the dealer, but cash is not always best. They like to sell you finance to boost their commission. You could always play along, getting a better deal due to having finance, but then change your mind and hand over your debit card on the day of collection.

We have had the Mk6 for just over 3 years now and I have considered that it could be time for a change, however I'd like to think that it is in exceptional condition and only done 33,000 miles. To me it's too good a car to let someone else have just yet.
Red Mk6 gone replaced with a white Mk7 which has gone too. Green Mk2 here to stay.

I did consider it in Sept last year and thank goodness I didn't. Cost of change too high, now being made redundant so, I am glad as I have the spare money as a bumper.
