Nut holding drive shaft in hub

1999 GTI 1.8 T
Is the star nut loosened clock or anti? Will a standard socket fit? if so what size?
What dictates whether bolts inboard holding shaft/joint are M8 or M10? Are they hex or star or torx?
Need to replace inner boot.
Many thanks.
Steve.

Outside nut is 30 and loosens counter clockwise. The inside ones are m10
