vr6 timing chains

I agree about never failing but as the engine needs to be out, would you risk using the old chain? (It's impossible to tell if it has stretched or links loosened)

my mate drove the car (ben victors car) and i did listen to the engine and i couldnt hear the chains rattling at all. But as its out i might aswell replace them.

where can i get the cam locking tool?

They tend to stretch and then jump teeth, but if the engine is out then it is the time to replace them.

Going by the people I know with VR6's they don't rate the later plastic tensioner!

When I looked at VR6's (when I bought mine) everyone said if it's over 100k miles and obd2 ensure the tensioner has being done as the later plastic one's don't wear well. I can understand that and never thought to question the info

(I know they fail on polo's etc but I don't really know the VR engine, I might ask the VR6oc what there opinion is?)

When I did the tensioners and chains on my vr, it was on 102k, after reading the guides and various threads I was expecting to see the tensioners and guides in peices, but everything was only showing a little wear. There was however a noticeable difference in the wear on the chains.

where can i get the cam locking tool?

10mm spanner  when you look at the end of the cams (when its at tdc) you can time it up by eye... kinda sounds pikey but when you see you'll notice you can't get it wrong. I had my old head in pieces and off several times no dramas regarding timing (and no tool used)
