Horn/air bag wobbling
« on: 13 April 2014, 22:18 »
Driving home today and I noticed something wasn't right with the steering wheel when turning, so pulled over and spinning it left and right and noticed the VW bag in the middle moving up and down as it spins.. bit odd I thought never noticed it before, then starting to touch the air bag area in the centre of the steering wheel and noticed the hole unit moving about 5mm up and down and rocking about.

1st is the normal and ive just never noticed it before, if its not has anyone else had this problem

Im guessing its prob a lose screw inside somewhere that holds the unit that holds the airbag, maybe accessed from behind the steering wheel needing to take it off to get to them maybe??

It is potentially normal without seeing it hard to diagnose however, if you want to remove it disconnect battery!!! and remove the upper column cover think the lower needs removing aswel the airbag unit is hooked on to the wheel you need to get a stubby flat blade in there to unhook the top and bottom these are accessible with the top centre of the wheel at the 9 o clock and 3 o clock positions its a bit fiddily and you need to apply downward pressure when unhooking once unhooked its needs a bit of a pull off you will then see airbag unit electrically disconnect the the airbag mounting has for studs with white plastic clips on them these need to be on the studs sometimes they stay in the wheel that should help you out finding any issues there is a vid on wheel airbag removal on youtube in diff language but you can see how it comes off

I might have a look on youtube see how hard it is, got some time off work end of the week so gonna pop into local VW garage and touch up their wheels and see how they feel. I hope its nothing and if there is something up with it maybe its just a clip has popped off
