New GTi lasted 3 hrs
« on: 12 April 2014, 19:11 »
I picked up my brand new Golf GTi DSG Performance this morning and 3 hours later it's back at the dealer. Luckily I was driving back in the direction of the dealership when it happened.

The first sign was a slight knocking from the front of the car which got progressively worse. Stopping at the first junction the knocking was very noticeable and pulling away in traffic the car was sluggish to respond. At the next junction the noise was much worse and there was the distinctive smell of burning clutch. Arriving at the junction where the dealership is located, the car stalled in the middle of the road. I was able to get it started again and abandoned it on the forecourt.

As the engineer had gone home for the day the salesman who sold me the car and the head of sales came out to see me, I started the car in park and the knocking noise continued. My car now sits in the workshop awaiting his return on Monday morning.

Any body got any ideas what it maybe?

I would reject the car, whatever the fault turns out to be. Good luck

Me too! If you've had it on finance you have a cooling off period too so tell them you'll extend that right and they'll do everything they can to help you.

Does the MK7 have a dual mass flywheel? I'd read somewhere that they were going to stop doing them for longevity reasons  for the MK7, but never got any confirmation that it'd happened. Dual mass flywheels are living on borrowed time after 80k miles for most marques.

Not sure you can outright reject without giving at least one opportunity to fix, even with something as catastrophic as potential gearbox failure - you'd have to look into that before you give the go-ahead to repair, if you plan on rejecting the car for lack of confidence in it.

Cancellation of the finance agreement does not automatically give the opportunity to hand back the car as suggested on this thread. Finance cancellation is finance cancellation, not car cancellation. For those that cancel their finance, they still have to keep the car (unless there is genuine rejection reason, as may be the case here), but must fund it a different way.
Whey ya bugger! It's finally arrived after an 8 month wait....

Well 4 months down the line from my original post, I thought I'd post an update on the story.

After a word with trading standards I was able to get the dealership to replace the car, they put me in a MK7 TDI BlueMotion and I've been driving that all the way though till yesterday when I took delivery of my new GTI (2014) spec (red instead of silver GTI logos).

The problem with the old car was narrowed down to items floating around in the oil causing blockages, the engine was replaced and the car is now for sale at the dealership.

The dealership was excellent through all of this and I'm loving my new car
