Manual MK6 - Groans/ Whines when clutch bites
« on: 09 April 2014, 19:46 »
Hi, had this manual car 2 weeks (not been driven until this Sunday though) and have noticed that when the clutch is taken to the biting point, whether on a flat road or on a hill start and whether in forward or reverse gear, there is a brief and embarrassing groaning or whining noise on moving off (noise probably coming from mid engine Bay Area although maybe towards front passenger wheel); and there is a slight vibration that can be felt coming up through the steering rack, moreso when in 1st gear.

The car is going into the main dealer on Friday for rectification of a few snags and I'll get them to look at this but I'd say it happens on about 3 out of 5 occasions when you move off in either forward or reverse gear.  Knowing my luck, it will behave when at the garage.

Any informed ideas would be really appreciated.

Thanks in anticipation

Hi, the car is going into the dealer today with a few points on the snags/ queries list now, including this issue which has been described on another forum as similar to the "Hoo" sound that an Owl makes.

Yesterday, I got the ipad on the dash and tried to capture the noise because the car has been doing it notably all week.  Would it replicate for my recording device? No!

I bought the car from Lookers VW and have so far been very impressed with their approach to quickly getting the car in and stating an intent to resolve any issues with minimum inconvenience to us.  Hopefully the reality will measure with their seemingly good intentions.

I've given them a written list of the snags (5 to date)/ symptoms so hopefully it's easier to get straight to the crux of any issues.

Posts on other forums indicate that remedies with this issue can include replacement of the clutch and fly wheel although a number of owners seem to be running the cars with the embarrassing noise unresolved because dealers can't or won't commit to remedy.

I've no major worries about this car though.  It's fully warrantied, the service history is spot on, it looks great and is brilliant fun.

Touch wood...

Well the first positive was that on arriving at the garage the Master Technician attended the car with me to assess the snags/ the issues on my list... and the whining noise came on immediately when reverse and when first gear were selected!

Of the noise, he immediately said that to resolve it, 'it's a gearbox out job' to replace parts that will probably include replacing the throw-out bearing return spring.  He says it's 'a day of job' for this job, subject to the parts being available.

All of the issues on my snag list, the garage has, without quibble, said they will address without charge and a courtesy car has been supplied.

If issues such as this were not addressed, even if deemed non warranty and non mechanical failure (only had the car 2 weeks mind), then I would simply reject the car and ask for a refund (which I would not want to do as it's a lovely car).

However, there has been no argument at all here, just a stated desire by the garage to resolve all and I'm very happy with the car and with the after sales service which to date, seem first class.
