For me it was all round costs - so mpg, tax, list price and residuals. Was about £80 difference a month for me over 4 years (if doing 15,000 miles and using 35 and 45 as average mpg's.)

I've always enjoyed fast diesels though, so doesn't feel like a compromise to me at least - although I'm sure I might have got the bug had I test drove the GTI.

If they can get the gti to do 50mpg on a run and 40 around town then I'd be buying one. It's getting closer but the overall costs are still in the gtd's favour at the moment.

Plenty of people who aren't company car drivers have bought gtd's so it's not just an exclusive company car.

No of course not, but it's a perfect choice for a company car for people who can't justify a GTI.

+60 ps peak gain from a chip? Sounds 'interesting'.

Safety protocols disengaged? It does sound a lot for just a chip change doesn't it? Maybe if it was running a larger turbo and / or larger intercooler - it might seem more plausible.

The only standard car I know of that's jumped even higher with only a rechip is Monkey Harris' Audi S4 with the 3.0 Supercharged V6 and that's mostly because it was so heavily detuned to stop it competing with the RS4 .....but that's no 4 pot turbodiesel!
