You are far more likely to dip into your warranty in year 1 than any other year, to fix the build issues, and that applies with all mass produced cars. Once the build issues are taken care of, most will find their VW very reliable in the longer term. One of my MK5s had about £3.5k of warranty work. Look on any forum and you'll see Audis, BMWs, Mercs etc - you name it.
I don't think the MK5/6/7 are any better screwed together than one another, but we usually hear the worst cases of VW letdown on these forums. The MK6 was by far the least value for money compared to the MK5 and MK7. MK7 costs very little more and is rammed full of equipment that would be optional extras on the MK6, and the MK6 cost 20% more than the MK5 (last MK5 RRP vvs first MK6 RRP) for what was a minor facelift.
If you've had a trouble-free MK6 then you've been lucky.
