Remap question
« on: 30 March 2014, 18:56 »
Hi had my car remapped today... It was by a friend of a friend who is a mobile remapped. I understand the results of this type of mapping won't be as good as a custom map set up on a rolling road but sadly I don't have that sort of cash to splash.

Anyway the guy came along downloaded a copy of the file on my ecu, went away and about an hour later came to upload the new file. All went well and it was happy days! I took the car for a good booting round the block and yes it felt faster. My car is a 1.8t AUM 2003 which was a 150 factory spec. The dude told me with the map that had been uploaded my car should be running at around 195 but of course there is no way of proving this which again I fully understood.

On the test drive I did notice the car was boosting to 9psi which is had always done. I asked the dude about this and he told me he didn't up the boost and only adjusted the advance timing, fuel pressure, air flow along with a few other values. His reason for this was that it was a far more reliable method of producing the power than upping the boost and blowing pipes and all that jazz.

Like I say the cars faster, smoother and pulls well but I'm just wondering if 195hp is really a realistic figure without upping the boost?? Iv heard most people running at around 16psi with a remap. Would there be any easy way for me to find out weather the car is pushing out more power without a rolling road?

Any help or advice would be welcome

Many thanks

If i was you i would just have saved some cash up to pay for your re-map from a reputable tuner ie nick @ r-tech or rhyso also does mapping that way you will know you have a proper map for your car and its going to perform correctly also you will have a better customer service too and any mapper should at least check your car for fault codes/running issues etc not just take your money load on the map and away you go so to speak not being critical bud in any way but you pays your money.........etc...etc Rule number 1 always use a reputable company  also i would be asking for my money back and see what his response is.

You can still get a bit of a power gain adjusting the timing i used to do it on old fords with carbs. With turbos boost helps its needed with a remap.

You can have a touch more power from various things but to make the 195 he claimed you would need a bit more boost.

Upping the fuel pressure isn't really possible unless you fit a different regulator and this can kill weak pumps anyway. This isn't a quick way of upping the power either.

Cheers for your advice, so what exactly would a remap change apart from the boost ans how much extra boost would I need to be running around 190-200?

Many thanks

It's hard to say really mine is on 240bhp with 18psi and I have mates running near 20psi just under 200bhp all depends on the car the tuner and the supporting mods

GTI is not a trim level. It is a lifestyle.
1999 1.8t AGU, KO3s, forge 007p, silicone tip and charge pipe, oil catch can, SS turbo back system, pipercross CAI, g60/vr6 clutch, 40mm apex springs, drilled and grooved discs, stage 2 remap.

So there's no rule of thumb on boost psi to hp output? I read somewhere that a 180hp factory version also runs at 8-9psi boost. So giving that mine could be running around 180.

Anything we say is at best a guess and nothing more. The fact you posted on here suggests you're skeptical, perhaps unhappy with the remap. It would be best to go to a reputable tuner who would be willing to do a 'trial map' so you pay if you're content, otherwise they put your old file back.
