Hi all,
Another noobie to this forum, and Golf ownership - never even driven one (don't ban me yet)..

My mission: Find the perfect car.. and it's not easy. So I have found myself considering a MkII Gti...

I've always been a bit of a petrol head, and I've always tried to own cars with something special about them. I'm not talking expensive stuff - it's not a money thing, or a BHP thing.. but cars that are just 'right', and have something about them.

My rap sheet includes: Fiat Coupe Turbo, 306 GTI-6, Mk1 MX5, and my current car an S2000, which I've had for 5-6 yrs now. (& absolutely love) I've decided I need something more practical, and the obvious choice would be a CTR, but they are just so dammed ugly & do nothing for me.

The problem I have is that there is bugger all out there that appeals. I've tried cars that are supposed to be 'good drives' - 325 BMW etc, but they all feel like a lumbering bus compared to the S2000 and soulless . I don't mean that in the sense of 'driving hard'.. I mean just normal road driving, slightly spirited or not. The S2000 feels so tight, so light & raw, like a go-kart, even at normal speeds. Frankly, if I'm honest there is nothing modern that feels like this without spending a fortune - cars these days are just so bloated, piling BHP on to keep the BHP/ton thing respectable - but I want lightweight, sharp handling, not just a lot of power. I'd still own my S2000 if it had half the power, if that makes sense. So, I'm looking at old school cars, and the MkII GTi fits the bill (from what I've heard!). Plus, I'm a bit of an old school guy.. I love classic stuff and want a car I can have for a very long time.

I know this might appear odd as a first post on here, but I'd love to hear what the driving experiences are for a well sorted MkII.. does any of the above ring true? i.e.. Sharp, lightweight, fun, raw etc.

I'd be especially interested in those MkII owners that have experience of MkI Mx-5 & S2000's!

Edit: PS.. this would be my dream car.. scroll down a little to the blue Golf..
