Golf R mpg?
« on: 27 March 2014, 09:57 »
Guys and gals who have got your Rs already (I assume not many yet!), what are you getting in terms of real world mpg?

I'm about to get my GTD next week, and coming from a Type R, no matter how I drive I know it is going to be A LOT better. I'm just curious if the R is any better than my previous Type R...not that I regret what I have ordered or anything as I bought the GTD purely because I now do too many miles to warrant a Golf R, just pure curiosity!

Mohsin: If you get a DTUK box for your GTD, you'd be leaving Civic Type Rs for dead in the overtaking range. Left 2 well spanked recently.
Whey ya bugger! It's finally arrived after an 8 month wait....

Low 30's seems to be the norm, although with ACC one bloke got an average 38 on one long journey.

I've touched 38 on a 150 mile motorway trip with ACC set at 75, but it averaged around 35mpg, round town depending on how you drive it'll either be mid 20's or high teens, mines not run in yet so it will improve, could be worse though.

Yes, this is the one and only mod I will be getting in a couple months down the line. I've got a contact within a reputable VW tuning specialist who states they are able to remap the new 184PS engine...but I need more details from them and compare with the DTUK box.

Aside that, I was pondering more on purely the development of technology on performance petrol engines. Where my Type R averaged approx. 27mpg with 200bhp, I was assuming you could probably get the same if not more quite easily from the new R - but with a HELL of a lot more power and pace.

Jimmy / Jimble: I find that actually amazing that the possibility is there with such an engine.

How does this compare to your GTI when you first was running that in?

The 600ish miles i did in the DSG mk7 was a little better but not a great deal tbh, motorway journeys 40ish round town max was 29 which i was really disappointed with.

I don't mind the mpg in the R considering it's performance but the mk7 GTI was poor compared to my previous mk6 GTI which is not how it was advertised.

I see. Good stuff with the R then. I've heard the old R was appalling for economy. So guess its a good move by VW on the new one.

My GTI PP manual is easily doing 40-45mpg on my 41 mile trip to work ranging from 50mph to 75mph speeds.
