What is Dynamic High Beam Assist?
« on: 18 March 2014, 10:45 »

There's an inherent danger of a long delivery time...I start delving into the options  ;D

I have specced High Beam Assist.  I'm not bothered about Lane Assist but I spotted the option below has appeared on the Configurator.  What is Dynamic High Beam Assist?  Is this where the beam is masked and contours around other vehicles?  It states that High Beam Assist is included so I assume the 'dynamic' element is different?

High Beam assist switches high beam on/off when it sees another car coming. Dynamic Light Assist (DLA) instead keeps high beam on but masks out oncoming cars so that they are not blinded: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IDDvCBPoLSU
I don't think that DLA is available in the UK.

So, there are two products High Beam Assist and Dynamic Light Assist. I believe that DLA must be specified with Lane Assist as it uses the same camera.

Not sure what Dynamic High Beam Assist is though....

Thanks.  So is 'Dynamic' High Beam Assist just the same as High Beam Assist?  VW don't like to make it easy do they!   I might try and ask the dealer, but I don't hold out much hope.

No, high beam assist means it goes from full to dipped beam when it sees another car in front. Dynamic light assist keeps the beam on full but will change the position of the beam so it does not blind the other driver (so it moves the headlight reflectors individually, where normal high beam assist simply puts a shutter on to dip the beam).

Seems VW Have thrown in the term Dynamic High Beam assist now too though.  I'm not sure if this IS Dynamic Light Assist with a new name.  We seem to have High Beam Assist, Dynamic Light Assist (which I don't think you can get in the UK) and now Dynamic High Beam Assist as included in the Lane Assist option.  I'm now confused  :embarrassed:

there is only two options

basic high beam assist (shutter operated)
and
fancy 'dynamic' beam assist (dynamic ranging and positioning)

if there is now something with lane assist on a uk price list that is probably the official name for DLA in the uk (the previous terms were probably -i.e. very likely - what it says on the german price list ;) )

Just had a look out of interest on the VW site:

High Beam Assist: £140
Lane Assist (new option): £625

The Lane Assist description does say "Dynamic High Beam Assist", but when you select it it selects the "High Beam Assist" for you as a £0 option.

This doesn't mean it's not giving you something different, knowing some of the VW descriptions...

There seems to be a bit of a bug at the moment also, selecting Lane Assist tells you it is also adding Discover Pro, so cost will be £2,390 - but on clicking Okay it doesn't add Discover Pro, just the £625 option.

I have lane and dynamic light assist. As described above, it trims the high beam so not to blind traffic. It is brilliant on country roads and on motorways also. It lights up the road ahead of you but will not dazzle incoming traffic. I would definitely order it again.

This is the camera in my car:

This is a video in German that shows it in action:

This is a video of the DLA headlights on start up. The sequence is different to ordinary cornering xenons. You can see when the car brings on the high beams but not in the middle. This is what the headlights do when you are following a car:

One other thing to note is the camera can also read traffic signs. If you spec the DLA and discover pro, then traffic sign recognition is a no cost option in most countries. I don't see it on the uk options list though. It can be activated with vcds anyway.
