Had a interesting conversation at LMF
« on: 17 March 2014, 19:49 »
I was in the local motor factors shop and a guy was buying about 6 Wynn's engine Flush in little cans and he also bought some CATACLEAN for removing sludge and coke build up.
He was a mechanic and over heard me about giving the EGR another clean and he owns a Passat with 250K on it.
He suggested the CATACLEAN would clean out the turbo, CAT, EGR and manifold anything where the fuel and air was going to pass through. After he said get engine flush to get rid of any deposits left in the oil.

So questions:
Would you use any of these products?
The engine Flush said do not use with high millage cars over 75K.
I took out the EGR today and it was spotless since it was last cleaned about 20K ago?
This all came about due to MPG being a tag low of late.

I've never used engine flush or any Redex or CATACLEAN type of derivatives just regular oil changes.
Discuss!

Can't remember the brand but some stuff ECP now stocks some oil flush stuff sorted a sticky tappet out on the GFs car. Wasn't a believer til then, still don't know if I like the thought of using it or not really.

Where all my moneys went.

Great unless it removes the crap holding your rubber seals together. ....
Never stick it in an old engine unless its your last hope

^engine flush as said it is sometimes the crap/deposits that are keeping the seals sealed and the engine flush can remove it, my old caddy tdi was sounding a bit rough even after an oil change so i ran some engine flush through it and changed the oil again less than a week later i noticed a couple of places were slightly weeping oil and i dont think it was a coincidence. it did run a hell of a lot smoother though

I've been on a forte flush training course. Can't fault any of their products. They all do exactly what they say on the tin.

I use oil flush every time I do oil changes without fail.

I was reading about Cataclean and I still can't work out how it cleans the CAT if its combusted at engine level?
Anyways I've got soot issues and low MPG, cleaning the EGR and getting some life back into the diaphragm shaft seems to have brought it back to life and got an extra 6MPG on the trip comp.
I've ordered the Cataclean and will report back if MPG and engine will be more responsive!
I'm Curious as for engine flush I might give it a miss as I've got over 70K and seals might be wearing thin?

I have only ever used that Redex injector cleaning stuff and it worked quite well. My sisters partner has been in the trade for 30+ years and can't recommend it enough. When I used it I just primed a new fuel filter with it neat and reved the balls off it for a minute or two. No smoke at all now, even under load!

Does Redex still smoke a 1000 cigs after you stick it in
Happy to report got another 10MPG out of her since sticking in Cataclean but I did clean out the EGR again which probably did more good than the Cataclean.
Was getting 30MPG around town now back to 39MPG, Motorway was getting 45MPG
I always know when the car pulls harder at 3K rpm and only getting 80MPH now it sits happy at 2.5K rpm @80MPH.
