1.8T Brakes
« on: 16 March 2014, 16:10 »
Right i know very little about cars so you may have to be patient with me.
Im sure this question has been asked before but i can't find the answers im looking for.

I have 1.8t, getting ready to get it remapped. Should be running around 210bhp when thats done (so im told)
Should i get bigger brakes? Or any other recommended brakes that might be good.
I've been told to get Audi tt 312mm front brake setup but some people have also said not to bother.
I do ideally like to be able to stop pretty quickly
So any views from some more experienced car enthusiasts would be appreciated.
P.S brake pads and discs need to be changed soon regardless anyway...

Yeah i heard a few people say there isnt much difference, but others saying there is.
Im not bothered about looks really, just interested to see if while i am changing my brakes if it would be worth putting in a bit extra ££ to improve braking.

Thank you.

I'm running a bit more than 210bhp with standard brakes and they do the job fine. Personally I'd just replace your current discs/pads with decent ones.

However if you do want a bigger setup then the 312mm upgrade is pretty easy.

If you want an in-between (without needing new carriers) I sell Brembo Max discs in 288mm for £103 the pair and pads start at £28 for Ferodo's.

http://www.brembo.com/en/car/replacements/products/Pages/Brembo-Max.aspx

or if you do go 312mm, I have a pair of std brembo discs in stock on offer at £80 the pair (all prices inc delivery)

I also do lots of other brakes for the Mk4 (along with other stuff) www.oemandmore.co.uk

I upgraded from 288 - 312mm and I did feel the difference however I changed, discs, pads and brake fluid too.

People do say that they do not notice a difference when upgrading BUT there is another good reason for doing it. If you running more power odds are your brakes will get hotter alot quicker.

having bigger surface area means better cooling on your brakes hich in theory means better braking and less chance of warping.

Not that it will happen but me and my OCD = money spending lol

For road use I doubt you'll notice the difference in heat fade between 288mm and 312mm, and power doesn't really come into that equation. I could get a set of 312mm discs smoking hot driving a standard 1.8t if I wanted to.

If your doing 0-60 with less or more power surely you are still doing 60 and need to break the same?

If bigger power means driving like a nutjob the surely you could potentially need better breaks even with low power?

Thats my theory lol

Awesome, thanks.
Do you have any recommendations for good performance?
I have not the slightest clue when it comes to brands...

For example...
2 X BREMBO DRILLED GROOVED FRONT VENTED BRAKE DISCS 288MM DIAMETER 5 STUD FITTING

1 X SET (4) NEW FRONT BREMBO BRAKE PADS

2 X NEW REAR BREMBO DRILLED GROOVED BRAKE DISCS SOLID 232MM DIAMETER

189.00 too good to be true?

(yes its off ebay, not buying from there as ive heard its not the best of ideas but easiest place to find examples)
