Finally decided
« on: 16 March 2014, 08:06 »
Hi all

I've been loitering on here for months now, but finally ordered a GTD yesterday in red with keyless, high beam assist and park assist.  I'm coming out of company scheme which has now become really expensive.  My mileage has dropped from 30k to 14k so it now makes sense to go private again.  I had one on demo for a few days and thought it was great.

I've currently got a 320d ed E90, which there has been so many problems with I could fill a whole page!  I've actually got a demo 125d this weekend and perversely this made me mind up to head straight for the VW dealer.  The only thing, in my opinion, that's 'better' in the 1 are the seats. You sit lower than the Golf, which I like, and the alcantara is nice and grippy.  Other than that though I preferred the Golf in every way.  The 125d didn't even actually feel much quicker, I'm sure it most definitely is a lot quicker but it didn't feel in different league.

I also looked at the A3 Saloon.  Yes, I know the hatch is directly comparable but I just don't like the looks. All very pleasant inside but just a bit too straight laced, even in s-line trim.

I did wrestle with the GTI vs GTD decision too as I know others on here did. For me it would have been an extra £100 a month to run a PP version.  I also have a TVR for a V8 petrol fix, so for the savings by taking the GTD I can fund my addiction

Thanks to all who have been posting over the last 12 months, it's been a great help in helping me make up my mind.  The dealer will be contacting me tomorrow with the order details, the long wait will then begin.

PS
Apologies for the long rambling post.
Golf GTD, Tornado Red, 5dr, Manual, High Beam Assist, Park Assist, Keyless and Winter Pack.  Ordered 15/03/14.  Estimated BW22. Confirmed BW25.  Collected 17/07/14.

Good shout.

I went from a (chipped) 120d to a GTI Mk V 6 years ago and I never, ever, ever regretted that decision. Currently  waiting for my Mk VII GTI (BW16) which shows what a good decision I think I made 6 years ago!

After being a little underwhelmed by my GTD, coming from a Scirocco 170TDI that seemed slightly faster (???), it has really grown on me since I got a tuning box. It was the raft of standard features and improved ride that steered me towards the GTD.

If this is your first private buy in a long time with nothing to trade in, are you going the broker route? Make sure you get a great deal either way.
Whey ya bugger! It's finally arrived after an 8 month wait....

Apologies for the long rambling post.

Welcome and no apologies due !!!!

It's always good to hear how people come to their decision as everyone has a different story to tell.

GTDs look great in red. I passed one coming in the opposite direction at sunset the other day and it really stood out amongst all the other traffic.

I'd totally agree with Exonian on the red - it looks great in all lighting conditions and it glows under artificial light at night, it isn't a complete bugger to keep looking clean either. There are surprisingly few red cars on the road less than 5 years old too.

Thanks guys.  I paid £23,950 including the options in the end. I used drivethedeal as a target price.  The first dealer couldn't get anywhere near.  The second one stated that they couldn't be supplied at the quoted price.  I phoned them in front of him and they confirmed £23,628 was a genuine price. He simply couldn't match that, best was £24k, said I'd shake on £23,900, we split the difference.  I know it's not quite as good as drivethedeal but I might have had to collect from Aberdeen for all I knew (I wouldn't want a driven delivery) so I didn't mind paying an extra £300 ish for a local dealer.  No train fare needed etc.  They are also guaranteeing the PCP rate as I think that finishes soon.

I preferred the white in the GTI but red in the GTD shows off the silver highlights in my opinion.

Nicely negotiated Jammy. I did a similar thing on my GTD, managed to get one of the local dealers within £200 of the DTD price (although I probably spent a bit more as I added quite a few extra's post order!) Like yourself, this  seemed worthwhile to me to be picking up from somewhere locally (and probably the garage I will use for servicing too.)

Amusingly 2 other local dealers completely balked at the DTD price.

GTD's seem to be about 13-14 week waits now, not as good as the GTI's but better than the 20 week+ a lot of the guys on here had to wait!

Sounds a very good deal.

And I'd have to agree with you on the colours and I think VWs advertising department would too as they use the same colours on VWs website!!
Yep, ended up with a white GTI myself but was ummm'ing and ahhh'ing about whether I should get a red GTD but then reminded myself that the whole reason I was moving my mk6 on was the VAQ diff in the GTI!!!!
My wife is currently dragging me around show homes so it's likely we will move soon and the only houses we like (can afford!) are miles away so maybe in a year or two a red GTD will come my way.
Carbon Grey second choice on either!

Never heard of that happening before - unless you got your DtD price on a bad day....
