Keyless entry manual engine start
« on: 13 March 2014, 00:53 »
I don't know if this has been covered before.

My new work car park requires me to get out of the car to open the gate to get access. When I arrive at the gate the start stop tech will cut the engine I open the door which automatically operates the hand brake and then I get out open the gate all the while the key doesn't leave the car. When I get it and turn the hand brake off and try to hit the accelerator the message advises on the head up display that I need to annually start the engine. Any idea how to do this. It's the same if I put the gearbox into park and then open the door without actually turning the engine off.

Do you have stop-start enabled? If so that can cause the "please start engine manually" error, depends on how long the car is sat in stop mode.
Try turning stop-start off and see ;)

It's probably because you've opened the door which has caused the handbrake to apply. You'll need to put your seatbelt back on and try the accelerator as I think it will release the handbrake. Without your belt on no matter what I don't think it will let you restart.

Thanks for the reply guys. I put my belt on and handbrake is off. It won't start up. How do you start the car manually.

Misterp - I'm not a DSG but the following works for me:

When you get to your gate take your seat belt off before you do anything else.  This will engage the handbrake and when you put the car in neutral and foot off the clutch the car will stay running.  Go and open your gate and come back.  Seatbelt back on and drive off.

I did this twice yesterday and two different places with gates and worked without an issue.

I assume the problem is due to when the start stop kicks in the door is still closed. When you get back in because you have opened the door you will need to put it in P before you can start it again.

By "manually" it just means push the start stop button, i'll be honest though i don't think i'd leave the key in the car! if the car gets pinched your insurance wouldn't pay out.

just out of curiousity does anyone push the button to turn the ignition on, and then push it again to start or does everyone just start straight away? I know im used to diesels but isnt it always best to let the ignition be on for a split second first, say first thing in the morning?

If it is like my current Diesel car with keyless, it is an automatic process.

I can get in my car on a cold morning, press the start button and it can be a few seconds before it fires up.  It is making sure that the plugs etc are ready before cranking the engine.  Can take a little getting used to at first.

I normally press the start button once to let the mirrors unfold while I put on my seat belt, then press the start button with my foot depressed on the clutch to fire the engine. Other times, I press the start button with my foot depressed on the clutch whilst the car starts. It takes slightly longer using the last method.
