Apparently it was rear end damage - the lady doesn't know much more - but she got someone to check out the repair when she bought it and they said it was all fine. I have to say it looks ok - but..

What about VW - would a main dealer be able to look it up on the VW database?

if vw has serviced it they should  :wink: but you might need to find what dealer has done it

Ah..so the seller bought it from the previous owner who had it written off?

Have a look under the boot carpet for wrinkles in the bodywork.

Good tip - thanks. I know it's hard to generalise but in your experience would a GTI clutch typically last up to 100k? I had a TDI a few years ago which lasted up until about 85K..

I could deal with the Cat D - but Cat D and no service history or report... nah.

Cat D does not need a report before going back on the road, Cat C does however, if you could see pictures before it helps, I looked a Cat D the other week and the car had pictures before, during and after repair.

But even then insurance companies are not keen to cover so I left alone.
