Door sticking, weather strip replacement?
« on: 07 March 2014, 08:22 »
Hi all,

My drivers door has always been a bit sticky to open since day one, some days worse than others. It turns out the rubber weather strip around the door has been rubbing on the rear door weather strip where the 2 meet when the door is closed.
This has resulted in wear which although not visible from a distance, can be seen close up and obviously will irritate when cleaning the car!
The dealer has kindly offered to replace the rear door weather strip as it's one piece apparently, so my question is does anyone have experience of these being replaced? Am I running the risk of a poor fit or is it a straight forward job for a main dealer? Does the risk of further damage, scratches to bodywork etc, outweigh something I should learn to just ignore over time?!
Not had time for a pic so apologies for that...

Door sticking

Anyone had any bother with the rubber on their doors? Literally the top 5mm of the rear edge of the front passenger door is snagging on the top of the rubber seal on the leading edge of the rear passenger door that is sandwiched between the 2 doors to provide a good wind/water seal. As a result, the door sticks a little upon opening.

Not sure whether something has expanded in the warmer weather, or maybe the front passenger door has dropped a tiny bit backwards on its top hinge.

Looks like a fellow mk7 GTD owner has a similar, if not the same issue with their drivers door;

My front passenger door is doing this. I noticed it a few days ago and it does seem to be the weather strip digging into the rear door weather strip. It is slowly damaging the rear seal so looks like a visit to the dealer. Did you get yours replaced?

Hi lew321

Yes, had my offside front and rear seals replaced last week.

The body shop had thought they might need to remove the interior door panels but turns out both seals can be done by just using a bit of lube and then carefully slid down into the doors.
They have done an absolutely top job and the door now opens and closes perfectly and the seal sits as it should. Now here's the interesting bit....
VW inspected the car first obviously and wanted to only replace the rear seal but to also adjust the door hinges as in their opinion the door had dropped. It was obvious to all (except VW) that it was the front seal that had been fitted incorrectly and was too long and this was causing the problems. Anyway, when i took it to the body shop, the manager there couldn't believe VW's diagnosis and after one heated discussion with VW later, he had got them to order a front seal as well!
So, 2 new seals and no door adjustment later, everything is perfect.
I realise it may be a different situation for you but just to share my experience.
