Bought gti, no 5th or reverse gear

Bought a gti today but can't get reverse or 5th gear, everything gearbox end is fine (bushes rods)but the lever flops everywhere and the rubber bush that locates on the turret under the gear gaitor pushes through and pops out any idea to why this could be happening?
Help appreciated as want to give it a proper drive

Have someone sit in the car and try to get 5th/reverse while you watch the links. This happened to when I was redoing the linkages, turned out I had put something on backwards or not righted a bolt, something like that... Derp

Cheers will do, was interesting driving home, I have no resistance left to right on the stick only backwards and forwards

Yeah definitely have a look at linkages, would've expected the resistance to be in the other direction as the forward and back movement is held in place by a clamp, when this isn't tight it slides out when you move the stick back and forth and stops the linkage from moving correctly.

All sorted it was the rubber bush with orange sleeve popping out of the transmission tunnel, dropped exhaust and removed the gear lever asy and fitted new one, just need to refit said exhaust then go for a blast

We'll took the car for a drive today and there's still an issue.
I can't get any gears with the engine running.
If I put it in 1st with the engine off I can get all gears when driving using a bit of force and doubling the clutch.

The gear linkages are all fine
I took the end plate off the box and inspected the release bearing and rod which are all ok.

Lastly I adjusted the clutch cable so the pedal is harder to push down but still the same.

The seller assured me clutch and box were fine and it was just a linkage bush worn and I trusted him as he was off this forum and seemed genuine. Now I can't get hold of him.

Any ideas if it's going to be a clutch or gearbox?
Only have one day I can get a ramp on sat and start basic training for army next week was hoping to have a car ready.

Can u select gears manualy with the selector coming directly out the box (in the engine bay)? 5th should be all the way back (towards the bulkheaed) and to the right. Reverse is as far away from the bulkhead as possible and also to the right, if its only 5th thats the problem then just buy a new 5th gear, if its reverse aswell then its new box time tbh. But you could get lucky and it might be just be linkage related, does sound a bit more like clutch or linkage than gearbox to be fair but im not a mechanic i just pretend i am
