Rust.

If it's a DSG, then the 40k service intervals for it.

Check the center top edges of the front wheel arches carefully. The good news is if the car has a good history and no accident repairs, then VW may honour the paint warranty.

The diverter valve is either near the front of the engine, near the top (on KO4 turbo cars, like the GTI Edition 30) or at the back of the engine, which will involve raising the car and getting between the engine block and the exhaust down pipe to find it. Plemty of how to guides on the net and videos on YouTube.

THe PCV valve is located at the top, front of the engine. You'll need to remove the engine cover to view it. But to test it, have the engine on and at idle, then remove the engine oil cap FOR NO MORE THAN A SECOND. If the engine tries to stall, it's all good. If nothing happens, repeat but hold it off for two seconds, if nothing then you know the PCV valve is gone. Again, loads of how-to guides on the net, quick Google search loads hundreds.

Moving over to Flickr, sorry for the broken picture links!

Thanks th3_f15t.

Also ask if the Cam Follower has been changed...this is not something you can easily check yourself when viewing a car...there are DIY guides on how to replace it though.
