Mk4 2.0GTI. Squeaks on starting...any advice?

Hi everyone. I've just bought my wife a 2003 MK4 2.0 GTI which came with a decent service history. Overall it's in very good condition and I've booked in it for some cosmetic bodywork repairs next week, just to get her looking as good as new.

The only issue we've noticed is a squeak/squeal on starting first thing in the morning. The battery was replaced recently and I've charged it yesterday. It doesn't appear to re-occur during the day, say after she's gone shopping for an hour, that kind of thing.

I'm thinking fan belt, maybe starter motor? Anyone have any suggestions?

i would say starter motor, mine always make that sound on start up.

Thanks for your reply James. Do you live with the problem with yours or did you have a new one fitted. The car is my wife's and I could do without the hassle of her getting stuck on her way home from work one evening. We've had the car for a few weeks and only noticed it yesterday (very cold morning).

Thanks Dom, I've got a mobile mechanic my dad uses coming round tomorrow morning to have a look. I'll report his findings then.

I have not touched it as i would hate to lose my map if i discconect my battery. Its been makeing this noise for about 5 years . My mums just got a golf mk4 1.6 and its the same lol.

Thanks fellas. Glad I found this place..very helpful advice. I'm useless with spanners, and would rather leave this in the hands of the professionals. If he does diagnose a starter motor issue I will show him the link to the fix if this is a cheaper fix than fitting a new one.

Spoken to my mechanic this morning who agreed this would be the issue, and have booked him to do this for me next Monday for which he's charging me £40. Said it was a known fault. I'm chuffed to have him agree with you guys and at only £40 it's not going to cost me the earth. Cheers fellas.

waste of 40 quid imo. if you can use a spanner you can do that << 2 hours.

also, chances are unless you replace the starter it will start squeeking agin. did mine and about a year later it was squeeking.
