Need help with estimates of damage to car
« on: 01 March 2014, 10:44 »
Long story short-the police have charged an individual who caused criminal damage to my golf and charged him.  The individual smashed the windshield and damaged the paintwork in the bonnet, wing and a door. The police gave asked me to provide estimates of  the repair work and have suggested I ask my insurance company to give an estimate but am also able to obtain estimates from elsewhere. I have called VW just about the windshield which quoted over the phone is about £200 plus labour costs. Painting the car in a paint shop will most likely cost a lot but I was hoping someone here will know a decent paint shop that is reasonable near Windsor or be able to provide a ballpark figure how much it would cost to paint the bonnet, driver's wing and door.. All in all it looks like the repair work will be expensive. It still runs and I would like to keep this car running. Any advice appreciated.

Rough estimate £150 per panel. I reckon £600-£800 for a proper job including a windscreen.

Where all my moneys went.

Golf MK3 1.6. Golf MK3 8v GTI.

Insurance would probably write it off.Windscreen would cost you about £130 (had mine done recently) and panels you could just change if you can find replacements in matching colour.

I don't know all the details of your car or what cover you have insurance wise so it's hard to give an opinion.

A couple of years ago a mate had his neighbour back out of their drive and dent his drivers door.Insurance wrote it off due to cost of door, painting and labour. He got paid out, bought car back off them for £100 and replaced door from breakers for £25.Car is now recorded though.

Likely write off (£600 for a proper repair with new wings at the least).

Is this not the car that seems to ahem... break down or not work a lot?

Go through insurance and its a write off mate.
Depends who you know. I could get it done for £200 but you could be looking at £600. Thats just paint.

yes this is the car that breaks down from time to time...but that is just how it is...the police have asked me to provide an estimate so I will go there on Monday and see what they say...if I need to phone my insurance company then I will do so...if not I will get estimates for the work and give it to the police.
This car had over £10000 of repairs done by the previous owner and I have put in a bit of money into it as well...I guess this car does not reflect the quality build of VW.....or does it...:)

No one here is trying to p you off or make matters worse that they already are,we are only trying to offer our opinions based on our own experiences and or knowledge.

The Police want an idea of cost of damage as they will charge the knobend with criminal damage. That has little bearing on and cost to you, even though the court may or may not ask for an attachment of costs in their sentencing.

If you are insured with an agreed value then it may be down to you to claim through them but if not you may have to bear the cost yourself and that will be up to you regards it's worth.

Sorry if my words ai'nt what you want to hear.

Its not worth claiming through the insurance, I would just buy second hand parts and then wait for a court settlement. He probably will pay it off £2.50 a week.

I am with swiftcover fully comp. I'd rather not go through insurance as most likely they will record this as a claim even though not my fault and insurance will go through the roof when I renew. So I'd rather get the work done without their involvement if that is possible. Thanks for the advice everyone.

take it you don't have NCD protection?

can't you claim from insurance and they will recover from the twit who caused damage without losing ncd?? [this is how it works in most of europe, uk really behind on that too?!]
