Mk2 1.6 Driver to Mk3 GTI 8v Conversion ????
« on: 27 February 2014, 15:47 »
Hello all,

Im pretty new to all this forum business so please excuse if I make any stupid errors.

Ive got a mk2 1.6 1991 that I want to drop a 2.0l gti 8v lump in. Ive got donor car sitting there ready for the big day but just wanted to clarify a few things before i start. EG.

. Whats the situation with the ecu and fusebox from mk3, do i need a harness .etc. or is it a simple joby seen as both are 2e fuse boxs (or so ive been told )
. Also looking to widetrack, can i use mk3 wishbones aslong as i use subframe or do i need to get passat wishies
. And please let me know if you can think of any other issues that im likely to face as this will be the first conversion ive done.

Thanks all who can help

I'm currently building a 2.0l 8v. You really want the head off a mk2 8v. The mk3 8v gti only puts out 114bhp from new only 2 more than the 1.8 mk2. The pb head is cheap as chips though otherwise just buy a gti and don't bother wasting the time on a conversion. Plus the brakes ect are not as good on a mk2 driver.

Alright Sgt_Lemon,

Truth is mate its for inscurance reasons, eg 1.6 on the logbook you know what i mean.
Im using the mk3 brakes, hubs n shafts anyway and going 5stud.
Realy just need to know about the wiring/fusebox issues with engine management.

You have a late mk2 so it should have the ce2 fusebox which is the same as the mk3. What engine is the mk3. Agg or 2e?

definately just plug and play, although i would just drop the complete front end (i.e struts off, whole subframe and brake set up) and put it on the mk2, mk2 and 3 are plactically the exact same, think even the dash fits too if im not wrong, saves a lot more hastle in the long run with all the little bits to finish it off at the end, or maybe thats just me.

Don't forget you'll need something to get fuel from the tank to the engine.  Mechanical fuel pump on a 1.6 engine, which will disappear with the engine.  Using the Mk3 tank/electric pump/wiring I think is the usual solution (may need fuel pipes too, not sure).

Pretty much the biggest forum no-no right there. Do us all a favour mate and either wait till you are a little older and can afford a 1.8 or don't bother. It effects everyone's premium when it goes wrong

Fair Point mate, told you im a newb. due to my postcode i pay over 2k annual for the 1.6 anyway and just got a quote for finished mk2 2l (hyperthetical) and it was cheaper anyway so no need to get all neighbor hood watch  :nerd:
