VW Warrenty Query
« on: 27 February 2014, 10:30 »
Folks this may be a stupid question but I purchased my April 10 plate GTI 11 months ago from my local Nissan dealership.
They kindly gave it a service for me on purchase but prior to that it had full service with VW @ Grimsby.

If I were to suffer say the timing chain issue would I still be covered under VW? Or would I have to take out additional warranty?

Also it will be having a service next month @ Lincolnshire VW Specialist so will probably have them look at the suspect item to see if it needs replacing.  At this point in time no dodgy engine sounds yet and mileage at 29k.

Cheers Ash

Sounds like any warranty you may have remaining will be with the respective Nissan Dealer and not VW, and is about to expire? The manufacturers standard warranty from new is 3 years or 60000 miles. Unless this was extended at some point then this no longer applies.

Excluding warranties VW was offering what is known as a Goodwill Gesture to those affected by the timing chain failure but there is no consistency in how much goodwill they would offer and it's very much on a case by case basis. What I do know is that 'brand loyalty' and age of vehicle is taken into consideration when assessing goodwill, so if the car has been serviced elsewhere or has galactic mileage they may not contribute as much.

Unless you have a good relationship with a particular dealer (I'm sure there are good ones) then they are best avoided in these situations, you'll most likely be dicked over and afterwards wonder why you paid £100 + per hour to be told how grateful you should be that VW can't cough up fully for a design defect.

If I had a 10 plate GTi and I knew about the timing chain issue I would be doing 1 of the following probably in this order:

Selling it

Getting an independent VW specialist garage to fit the revised tensioner kit at my next service (probably brining forward the next service date to now)

Only servicing it at VW main dealer - as soon as you service it elsewhere if it goes bang you will definitely not get any good will. When i service it I would also be mentioning the timing chain and getting the garage to promise to be very good and helpful if it does go.

FYI my chain slipped on my 10 plate at 22k miles..... If VW hadn't paid for the engine my bill would be around 6k instead of 750 quid and 750 quid still stings.

Thanks chaps for the advice, made a slight blunder on my mileage im actually @ 39k.

Just waiting on a call from the VW dealer who supplied and serviced the vehicle upto 29k - going to check the history and see whether the revised tensioner may have already been spotted/fitted.

If not will get this changed at LVS during service.

Is there a rattling sound on startup?
