Why would you have your oil above the max? ie over full! ,i  have my level halfway between as too much oil and lots of revs not only creates excess crank case pressure which stresses seals ,its also harder for the crank to wade through the extra oil reducing performance.

nope about 2mm above maximum as always as i say it was dark brown smoke didn't look blue and was definitely not white.
I have put my foot down previous to this event with no smoke or any problems and oil change was done over a month ago now and not been topped up since.
So to much oil is not the issue but it is very puzzling.

DO NOT OVERFILL YOUR OIL!!!!!

Thats what caused the huge billowing of smoke!
You will kill your engine by doing this!
halfway between MIN and MAX is where it should be.

Your sudden burst of power caused oil to pass the rings due to excess pressure in the bottom end/sump

Been like this for along time also as I said previously not blue smoke after investigation tonight my air sensor was not connected as wires had snapped brown smoke means it was fueling causing brown smoke  nothing to do with the oil at all I have had my car like this for over 6 months with not 1 problem with blue smoke or running problems.
Surely a maximum line is a good line to fill to car drives superb other wise.

well i think its just down to opinion i bet you 50% of people fill car to max with no problems i work in the largest Alfa Romeo specialist in the country and only problem we ever see is under filling not over filling.
my 5 years in a garage i have never heard of engine fail due to oil being on maximum but im not that paranoid to worry about half a litre of oil more, when oil is pushing out the breather pipes i will worry

all 16 cars i have had have owned have always been on max not one engine failure due to this.

When I worked at halfords a customer needed some oil to top up his mk2.

He bought a 5 litre bottle and proceeded to pour the ENTIRE bottle into his engine. Needless to say there was uber amounts of smoke, and the engine was coughing oil out of every breather!

this is extreme over filling this would make the oil way above max level, 5 litres in a engine with oil already in it will cause damage yes.
