Mk2 gti 16v value?
« on: 19 February 2014, 17:53 »
Hi I'm going to look at a 3dr black gti this weekend.
The car is mechanically and structurally sound with a few blemishes on the paint but in generally very good order and the lad is asking £1950 for it which seems fine.
My plan is to restore the car, only problem is the car has no service history as it has been lost. If I restore the car will this greatly affect the future value of the car and put off potential buyers if I decide to sell on at a later date?
Any advice would be much appreciated.

Do you have any invoices for work done? If not and as you are going to retore it, take pictures and keep the paperwork for everyhting you do.

Its 22 years old minimum, don't worry about service history too much at that price
Make sure the shell is solid, particularly around the screen, chassis legs, filler pipe and sills and any other bit that does not unbolt.
Good panels are getting hard to find, bad copies take longer to fit and make good if you can get them right at all.
Everything else mechanical can be got hold of easy from other VW models, its trim and other deleted items you will get bum raped for
I sold my 16v keys for a fortune, got another somewhere i'm keeping for my pension.

For 2k it wants to be pretty straight and free of naughty rust

How much do you intend to spend on restoring it? If it's £2000 to begin with and you spend another £2000 on it, don't expect it to get £4000 for it when you come to sell it.

Mine is a previous owner, full service history, never modified car. I've had quite a lot of work done in the 5 years that I've had it and still have some more planned. When it is finished, hopefully to concourse standard, I will be over £10,000 into it. It won't be worth anywhere near that if I wanted to sell it, but where could I go and buy a similar car from? Restoring a Mk2 is something that you do because you want to, not because you want to make some money.
Red Mk6 gone replaced with a white Mk7 which has gone too. Green Mk2 here to stay.
