ABF alt/ps pulley question
« on: 17 February 2014, 07:42 »
How important is it to have a damped alternator/power steering pulley fitted to the ABF?
I can't seem to find one for sale but I could make myself one out of a nice bit of ally. The only trouble is it won't be damped. Will this cause any problems that anyone knows of?

Did you get the main pulley off?

I wasn't taking the cambelt crankshaft pulley off, just the auxiliary crankshaft pulley. I could see it wobbling before I started trying to take it off which explains why my p/s was always a bit dodgy, regardless of belt condition/tension. The pump spins freely so it's not that.

The damping takes up some of the run out/shock loading and avoids applying it to the crank shaft.
This is where I went off on one about going bigger on the bolt sizes as this is what damages the threads....
Dont go for a solid one just not worth the risk imo, new ones are top price from the stealers but you will get better grip/drive on the vee belts from the fresh metal, maybe Boney can source a cheap one.

Not being funny but have you put it on with the location bump in the wrong place, normally you have all sorts of issues when the rubber has perished which I take it you did not have or see before?

The tensioner is £32

The pulley itself is £29

I think I'm getting the right pulley?  :undecided:

You confused me now Spike!
On mine the power steering and alternator are seperate.
Have a ribbed belt that goes around crank pulley, air-com pump and alternator
V belt that goes around crank pulley, water pump and power steering pump.

And if its that tensioner in BB's photo, yes you definitely need that and its a pain to sort out!
I had to use mole grips on the tensioner and a spanner to lift that!

The pulley I need bolts onto the crankshaft sprocket with the 4 bolts and locates on a pip. This is what I'm referring to as the alternator & p/s pulley. The item I have taken off of my car is one single component consisting of two pulleys.
I know it's located back on to the crankshaft sprocket properly as the alternator pulley part of it is running completely true, but the p/s section is wobbling as it's bent out of true.

It looks like this basically:

I'll whip it off in a minute and get a part number.

It's normally the pas bit that goes from over tightening to get over squeak and slip rather than buying a new one
Looking at the online cat you should be able to use the 8v  item, but do check.
At that price it looks like a scrapper job
