My car has been running fine but in the last 2 weeks going at speed the temperature raised to a point it told me to STOP Engine.  I put the car into neutral and the temperature immediately dropped down to 90 degress (normal).  This always happens on journeys at speed after about say 10 minutes driving.

When I turn the car on I sometimes get a message saying 'STOP Engine - Check Coolant'.  The coolant is fine and this seems to be an intermittent fault which keeps occurring.

To make matters worse, I was driving at further speed and another STOP Engine - Oil Pressure warning was triggered.  I was pushing the car hard at the time as was wanting to check my temperature.  The temperature did not hit the red but was half way between 90 and the red.  I immediately stopped the car.

Since this I have drove the car on short journeys and taking it easy and both the temperature will sit at 90 degrees and no stop error messages appear.  The car drives fine and sounds fine - its just all these errors.  Can anyone advise?

Someone said to possibly test the dashboard to see if it is possibly a fault in the dashboard.  Can anyone tell me how I can do this?  I do have the VAGCOM software - but have no idea how to do this particular test.  No fault codes are showing on the car.

I am also considering just selling the car as it is.  It is 25th Anniversary Edition of the Golf.  Again anyone advise how much I may be able to sell this for?  Best place for advertising.  I'm sure some mechanic may be able to get to route of the problem.  For me i'm starting to think I've had enough and its time for a new car.

Any help advice on any of the matters above are greatly appreciated - thanks in advance

Sounds like your water pump is failing and the oil pick up pipe is blocked

The fact you have driven it like this for the past two weeks is not a good sign........

Yes I know - at first it was only temperature going up and I have not drove it a lot.  There are no horrible noises coming from engine - you i'm hoping I've not caused any damage.

Would putting it into a garage probably be best for them to test if it is water pump failing and clear out the oil pick up pipe.  Is this an expensive job?  They may be able to advise if I have caused any engine damage.

Does your car have a oil cooler pump because if that's not working the oil will be at a higher temperature to normal and causing the water temp to increase aswell. But am not sure, keep asking round for advice then if your still unsure I would book it in the garage

This is what is most likely.

I certainly wouldn't drive it until you've got it sorted. Don't clear out the pickup pipe, just replace it - the part isn't very expensive.

If you take the thermostat out you should be able to feel the water pump to see if the impellers are still intact. If you change the water pump then it makes sense to replace the cambelt and tensioners at the same time.

Hi NiƱo I'm in Edinburgh area.....

As for price for selling as it is I'm honestly not sure was hoping someone can possibly advise on a price.  It is a nice car, someone who knows what they are doing should fix it
