EVAP/recirc deleted - ABF Cold start issues - Help!!
« on: 13 February 2014, 09:51 »
Hey guys, new to GTi forum but you may know me from ebay, Facebook or The other forums. Ive been going round in circles trying to sort my running issue to no avail .. An figures this is the best place to start, so here goes -

Since fitting my ABF engine I can not get it to tick over when its cold without revs. I have deleted the EVAP/charcoal canister system, leaving it to vent by the rear wheel.  I fabricated a intake pipe with the airflow sensor situated inside it,  and vented the crankcase with a breather filter and plugged the two TB ports. A new coolant temp sensor has been fitted. ISV replaced and during the rebuild all new plugs leads dizzy cap etc has been replaced, apart from the coil pack.

Here's some photos of what it's like now:

No faults are showing on my full vag com diagnostics programme, however if the larger port on the TB is uncapped it will fire up fine, revving at around 1,800rpm. As soon as the engine warms up the cap can be replaced and it ticks over as it should, but will not tick over from startup on its own accord.

Large cap off - fires up fine but tickover erratic

Large cap on - won't fire up but will tickover as normal when slowly replaced shortly after starting the engine?

I'm at a loss, as help via Internet is only as good as you can explain the situations, I would love for any ABF owners with knowledge on deleting items to help me out, as it's getting sooner to UD, I'm inside and don't have a working motor!

Fire away questions at your free will .. Thankyou, Aaron

Have you ported the tb? Port and polish?

hmm

Looking at this pic, the large one goes into a valve which i guess is held open whilst the engine is started and then closes once it gets some warmth (I don't know how but I guess it's all down to the vacuum) and the litle vents back into the air intake. On your car the engine isn't getting the correct vacuum hot or cold causing the issues you have

I can't see how to fix it easily, but I guess you'll need to somehow connect the 2 pipes back into the vacuum system and I guess use a valve somewhere (let's see if anyone techy can advise further?)

When I ditched all my EVAP crap I simply blocked up both the throttle body vacuum outlets and left the tank breather hose poking down towards the A/C drier. It was like that for over two years without a single running issue.

I thought the common action was just block the outlets and let the breather just vent to atmos, I do wonder why it's upset this engine?

I am thinking it's something to do with that being removed and the newly placed air flow meter? (maybe the ecu is having issues with the new vacuum caused by both being altered. I would try the old air flow meter and blank the plugs, see if it improves anyway)
does it have a ported tb?
