tyre pressure question
« on: 11 February 2014, 08:56 »
tyre pressure:

do you tend to go with what's written on the fuel indicator or what the tyre manufacturer suggests?

for example, michelin PS3 suggests higher pressures (by 3-5 bars) than what's written on the GTI's fuel tank.

I'm asking because i'm trying to prolong the life of my tyres for as long as I can and pressure seems to be taking a lot on them when not set properly.

I've always used the recommended pressures on the fuel flap, 38psi all round for the 18" PS3 and GY f1s I have used and dropped to 35psi for my winter tyres, always been reasonably impressed with the longevity and even wear of the tyres on what is a fairly powerful fwd car so must be doing something right

Same here.  I stick with fuel flap recommendation, which is a whopping 41psi all round for 19".  Get reasonable wear.  Mind you, the fuel flap recommendations for the same sizes seem to vary greatly.  On a similar previous thread, several members with same size tyres all had different psi on fuel flap.

Yep defo follow Fuel flap - Its all about the weight of the car. You could put the same tyre on a lightweight car and only need 28PSI - Golf GTI need / recommended 35-38PSI on 18s

greatly appreciated guys, fuel flap it is then. used to run on around 28 psi - following the recommendation of a tyre guru who told me lower pressure would give the car better handling - it may have done so but totally f***ed my tyres in no time.  With my new set of PS3s i went all the way up to 38 and hopefully will get more life out of the tyres

38PSI on my PS3s 20k on the front on the last set rears still going. VW always lower them to 34 at service point too.

Something tells me you meant psi not bar, plus I suspect the 3 to 5 psi is compensation for hot readings.

I don't.
The car felt awful at the standard pressures. I run softer at the front than the 2 person suggestion, and the rears mid way between the 2 & 4 person suggestion.
More feel, better turn in, less understeer...and no adverse tyre wear.

The standard high pressures are great for fuel economy...but not so great for grip, or ride comfort.
