Do I need a new starter motor?
« on: 09 February 2014, 16:26 »
Hi all,

I've tried a search today but none have really answered my problem. This morning I was working on the Corrado, had it running on the drive etc. Turned it off, went to move it again about an hour later and it wouldn't start. The immobiliser was working alright as it was letting the fuel pump prime etc.I can hear the relay click as I turn the key to start the car but there's nothing from the starter.... no clicking....nothing. All fuses are good, earths and main live feed are cleaned and have power to them.

Can a starter just stop working like that or is there something else I have missed??

 Thanks in advance,
 Andy

does it have vw factory fitted alarm?

you can check if you get voltage to terminals on the starter and solenoid when trying to crank. if yes, then it's the starter (mind you it has permanent 12 from battery, only solenoid then gets 12v from ignition switch), if you don't get voltage on solenoid then there is something else wrong. then it would be checking from ignition switch going forward.

It just has the aftermarket immobiliser.

Cheers for the heads up, I'll get a friend and a multimeter on it sometime in the week :afro:

Grabbed him as he only lives two doors up

Got the permanent live and also got 12v when the ignition is turned from the small wire connected to the end of the solenoid.

New starter time then do you think ?

check that ground connection is still ok... if it is then yeah... starter stuck (or solenoid).

you can try to whack the solenoid to free it up...

The earth is fine, checked the continuity and connections. It's had a whack or two so far
