buy a mk5 or not?
« on: 05 February 2014, 22:01 »
Hi,

currently a Seat Ibiza driver but want a mk5 but dont no where to start! roughly my budget being around 8k-9k   (2007 model)  (ish)  .

Done some homework and am i right in thinking there pretty reliable?

Manual being the best option? and the later model with the tsi engine not the fsi?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!  found stuff about rear tyres wearing and leaky doors?

Volkswagen group cars (which incorporate Seat), are very reliable. Like any cars, with age comes wear but provided it's had a good, full history you should be safe. Don't let the apparent amount of faults on a forum fool you, just compare that to how many of us are driving cars without these issues and you'll soon see that it's a minor group who experience issues with their cars.

As for model, well, that's where it's tricky. Start by deciding which fuel you want/need and then go from there. That budget should buy you a well looked after late model mk5!

Manual or DSG is a long, never ending debate. Go drive both and see which you prefer.

Moving over to Flickr, sorry for the broken picture links!

Check for rust around the tailgate appature, the wheel arches and the sills, just inside the front wings (open the front doors and look at the gap at the bottom of the door shut).

... it's turned into a fashion show for poofters.

yerh tried a DSG and a manual and prefer the manual personally. only thing being it was a FSI engine and i heard it was best to go for the TSI?

If you are after a DSG, check the 40k service interval for the box has been done.

2.0 FSI is alright ;)

Feels slower than the 1.4 TSI that has 10 hp less but is faster...
