Are 8V and 16V ignition coils the same?

Can I use an ign coil from an 8V in a 16v?  I'm assuming I can...
1989 Mk2 8v

If they are both transistorised then you should be able to.
If the coil is the old plug and points type system it's not compatible with each a transistorised(electronic) ignition system.

i have a 16v and the coil broke so i got one off a gl model seemed to have the same part number and works alright.  Although i may have had the wrong one to start with?  Bare in mind that i do have a cold start problem but other than that it runs fine.
maybe someone else will know
