Tap/rattle from rear of engine mk4 1.8t
« on: 31 January 2014, 21:21 »
It is an intermittent problem I have been having. The rattling/tapping follows the amount of revs. Usually when cold. It sounds like it's coming from down the back of the engine, but never got to look properly in time because it usually disappears. The car is a 2001 aum golf.
Just wanting to know if there is any common faults of this description.
Thanks, Adrian.

sounds like vvt chain, these engines are common for sludge build up and the oil pick up pipe blocking up with sludge witch will not allow enough oil on start up witch is why it's tappy first then clears, might be worth checking vvt tensioner and oil pick up pipe and pump

Great cheers. Sump off, pretty sure it's easy to get to. The car is on 38k miles.. Possibility that all the sh!t in there has had plenty of time to settle to bottom and cause this problem thinking about it.
Will have a look on my next free day!

I'll just check everything's tight. It's not so much getting worse, just annoying. Want a downpipe soon so good time to check but it's not leaking.

^^ this. I had my clutch and turbo actuator changed at the same time, and had a clicking/tapping noise that I was sure was the release bearing, but turned out to be the turbo/manifold gasket.

Thanks for the reply!

However, I recently found out that this was something else.
I realised that the rattle kind of noise only occurs when the secondary air pump is running. I researched what the system consists of a couple of days ago and after chasing pipes around, the furthest back component linked to the secondary air pump is the vacuum valve that is held on with two bolts that would get blanked off if i removed the secondary air pump system. low and behold, when I started the car and listened to this component, the rattling seemed to come from here. Therefore I'm 99.9% sure that it is this at fault. looked into replacing it but they're over £100 new.

Found the above link so I will be removing the system for the sake of saving money.. not to mention that removing the secondary air pump seems to be a common mod.

Will post back here once done to confirm that it was this part at fault when I can.
