14 year old Golf GTI with 150HP?
« on: 31 January 2014, 11:52 »
I'm looking to buy my first Golf GTI. My budget goes up to about £1800. I have looked on Autotrader and noticed most of the 1.8 GTI'S HAVE 150hp. I was just wondering given the age of the car and use etc, is it likely that a few horses may have escaped over the years?
I remember watching an episode of Top Gear where they bought some older cars and they'd lost a lot of HP.

Majority of them are 150bhp from factory thats why mate. There was a 180bhp version with a 6 speed box. They dont come up often tho.

You could easily map a 150 to 190-210 depending on engine code.

Aum had a ko3s turbo and agu had ko3.

As above however to answer your question. In short, yes they will lose Hp like any aged car.

mine made 157 on 99 ron fuel Wednesday.. no performance enhancing mods but stuff recently replaced like all the pipes and dv valve to a forge, so I suppose it depends on the car and how well it has been maintained etc. mines an aum engine code.

Some will make more power as they age a bit! Some will lose some. All depends how they're looked after.

Classic case, my boss had a banger Rover 216 and a customer had basically the same car but immaculate and a higher up trim level, same engine.

Bosses had been round the clock and this other old guy was on 22k. The 22k one was absolutely gutless as all of it's 11 years of life it had been poodled round. Literally did not want to rev.

Bosses was quite nippy.

Where all my moneys went.

I'd have to disagree with that statement i'm afraid.

Providing it's in good condition, and well looked after (serviced as it should be an all vacuum lines in order), I'd expect a 200k mile AGU to still be making 150bhp or more.

These engines are remarkably good at covering high mileages, my original AGU engine had done over 216 000 miles when i removed it, with over half that spent at 230bhp, and the final year spent at 300bhp without issue.

Agreed, almost all of the pre-map dyno runs I've seen for 1.8t's have made at least 150bhp.
